Thanks to the Office of West Virginia State Treasurer Riley Moore for helping JCS middle school students Get a Life! Throughout the week, eighth-graders participated in the interactive, award-winning program to learn about financial literacy while having a little fun along the way. Opportunity for 7th and 8th Grade Students
Seventh and eighth grade students interested in science, computing, engineering, and math have the opportunity to apply for The Governor's School of West Virginia STEM Institute (GSI).
The theme of GSI for current 7th graders is Food for Thought (and Fun). GSI students will engage in a variety of projects and activities related to the math and science of food. The goal is to open students’ eyes to what lies behind the everyday activity of growing, preparing, and eating food in relation to math and science. Students will attend either June 16-24 or June 25-July 3.
Eighth graders will learn about the magic of the universe as they study the mysteries of outer space utilizing data from the Green Bank Observatory in Pocahontas County. Accessing the information under the guidance of nationally recognized scientists and instructors, students will learn about the constellations, outer space and, perhaps just as importantly, about their inner selves. Students will attend July 10 - 23.
In order to apply, students must be a West Virginia resident, dedicated to learning, and willing to accept academic challenges. Students must hold a B average in Math and Science, have no grades below a C in 7th or 8th grade, and have two teacher recommendations. Additional information about GSI and requirements can be found at https://govschools.wv.gov/GSI/Links to an external site.
Applications can be found at https://govschools.wv.gov/GSI/Pages/applicationsforms.aspxLinks to an external site. and are due to your School Counselor by March 14. Teacher recommendations should be requested well before March 14 to allow time for completion. If you have questions or need assistance printing your application, please see your Counselor prior to March 14.
