We want to give a huge shoutout to our substitute teachers and service personnel on Substitute Educators Day! These members of our JCS community play a crucial role in the continuity of daily education by stepping in at a moment's notice to provide school or district-wide coverage wherever it's most needed. They are talented and adaptable individuals who are relied upon by administrators, teachers, and students. We're so grateful to all our subs for their important contributions to our educational community. Thank you! Interested in subbing for JCS? 8th Grade students in Ms. Waller's and Ms. Musser's classes completed four labs investigating surface tension. In the first lab, they created a soap boat out of aluminum and investigated what happened when they initially put it in the water and what happened when they added soap to the outside of the boat. In the second lab, the students filled a pie plate with water and a generous amount of pepper. They added a drop of dish soap to a q-tip and investigated what happened to the pepper when they placed the q-tip in the middle of the plate. In the third lab, students poured milk into a plate and added food coloring. They investigated what happened when they placed a q-tip with dish soap in the center of the plate. In the fourth lab, students created density towers using their knowledge of the density of the following items: corn syrup, vegetable oil, dish soap, water, and rubber alcohol. Students created a hypothesis and wrote down their observations for each lab.

Veterans Day: Honoring All who served
Congratulations to Ms. Alyson Whitacre who won the State Award from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution for Outstanding Service as a Teacher of Western Civilization. Ms. Whitacre originally won the local Bee Line 2023 Chapter Award for Outstanding Teaching in Social Studies in April. The chapter said that "Ms. Whitacre stood head-and-shoulders above other applicants for her abiding commitment to reaching the greatest percentage of learners in her classroom to ensure that the most students possible can grasp historical concepts." Ms. Whitacre has taught 7th Grade Ancient Civilizations for six years. In teaching, she is passionate about making history hands-on, interactive, and movement based. Ms. Whitacre's personal passion is archaeology. This summer she participated in a dig in Yorkshire, England of a medieval village. She unearthed pottery and structures from the 1200s. Pictured with her are representatives of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Eric Vandell, principal at HFMS.
