During state testing week, Ms. Whitacre's 7th grade classes spent time investigating Mayan civilization via an Amazing Race Geocaching Quest and an archaeology lab activity. For the geocaching quest, Ms. Whitacre's classes used GPS coordinates and Google maps to track down their caches. This was a timed quest where each group had their own coordinates and clues to find. All clues and riddles were about Mayan civilization, which led into a lesson on archaeology in Mesoamerica. Students were given terracotta pots to paint glyphs on. The pots were broken and the students were then asked to reconstruct the pot using pottery reconstruction techniques. These activities gave students the opportunity to interact with Social Studies not only outside the classroom but also as an archaeologist or a historian who is conducting research in the field.

Ms. Kern and Mrs. Barker's 8th Grade West Virginia Studies Classes recently went on a walking field trip to Storer College. Before the trip, students learned about Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois and their differing views on how to achieve full equal civil rights for African Americans. They also learned about the history of Storer College and its role in the Niagara Movement. The Niagara Movement was a civil rights movement led by W.E.B. Dubois and William Monroe Trotter. Harpers Ferry was chosen as the location for the second meeting of the Niagara Movement in 1906.

Students in Ms. Rinard's and Ms. Turley's 8th Grade Math classes reviewed for the state test using Question Trails. Question Trails are a fun movement based instructional strategy where students solve problems and use the answers to lead them to the next problem until they complete the entire trail. Students enjoyed the activity and the unique way to review what they have learned this year.
